About Northern Lights CFC

The Combined Federal Campaign is the single workplace giving campaign for the federal government in which federal employees have the opportunity to donate to charities of their choice through payroll deduction, cash, or check. The national campaign is comprised of several geographically-defined campaign areas across the country.
The Northern Lights CFC includes counties in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin (map).

Local Federal Coordinating Committee (LFCC).
The LFCC is the oversight committee of the campaign, made up of federal employees from across the campaign area who determine overall direction to the PCFO for the campaign. This committee is also responsible for reviewing and approving the local charities in the campaign.

Principal Combined Fund Organization (PCFO).
The PCFO is a 501(c)3 organization selected by the LFCC that manages the campaign. It  organizes campaign events, provides agency coordinator training, receives employee donations, and distributes donations to the designated charities. The PCFO for Northern Lights is Community Shares of Minnesota.

Campaign Timetable.
June-July: Agency heads designate coordinators for campaign and notify PCFO.
August-September: Agency coordinator training
September: Campaign kickoff
September 1-December 15: overall campaign period; individual agencies schedule within that timeframe. Donations and pledges submitted to PCFO and to payroll offices for processing.

Each agency runs its own campaign. The agency coordinator works with the PCFO to get needed campaign materials and to ensure that each employees knows about and has the opportunity to contribute through the CFC. Since donating is voluntary, agencies are encourage to make this worthwhile endeavor a festive and pleasant experience for employees.

This tool reduces administrative costs buy cutting down on errors in math, legibility, and coding of designated charities. It also reduces the time an agency coordinator has to spend in collecting pledges and donations. It also helps to contain campaign costs by reducing the number of printed forms and booklets. The online searchable database provides an easy way to identify charities by code, keyword, and category.
